First published at www.examiner.com/gadgets-in-seattle/

Apple’s iPad 2 goes on sale today at 5pm, less than a year after the game changing original Ipad.

It will be interesting to see how early sales go. Has Apple already saturated the tablet market with its successful iPad sales? Will original iPad owners trade up for the new model, which now features cameras, an updated processor, and is slightly thinner, but not a lot of other upgrades.

Apple has obviously worked hard to keep the price point of the new device at the same as the previous model to not scare away customers.

So if you are in Seattle, where do you get an iPad 2?

Sources report the device will be available at the Apple Store University Village, Target, Best Buy at Northgate and South Center, Walmart and any AT&T or Verizon store. Only the 3g version will be available at the AT&T or Verizon stores.

I spoke with local tech blogger and Apple Expert Matt Hickey, who plans to go to the University Village Apple Store this evening to buy a new Ipad 2.

Matt already owes an original iPad, so why upgrade?

“Because, professionally, I write a lot about the iPad and other tablets. My keeping the latest and greatest in my bag isn’t just an early adoption/vanity thing. It’s necessary.
People expect guys like us to know what’s up. To actually know, we need to get our hands on the hardware ASAP.”

Craigslist already has people claiming to be in line, who can ‘hook you up’ with the iPad 2, for a price of course, selling the 16 gig model for $700, over $200 over the Apple Store asking price.

And what of the rumors that there won’t be any available at the Bellevue Square Apple Store? This in unconfirmed at this time.

Good luck iPad 2 hunters.

Even if it was a cardboard cut out version of Dell’s new tablet that Steven Lalla, vice president and general manager of Dell’s commercial client product group, was holding up, the promised specs had to get the attention of tablet wanters everywhere. Lalla and the cardboard display of the tablet were the stars of the recent Dell Means Business event in San Francisco on February 8th, 2011.

With a 10-inch screen, an Intel processor and running a full version of Windows 7, the business tablet is designed for those “who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability, and integration with existing infrastructure investments.” and is due out in the middle of this year.

This is a huge step for tablets becoming actual computers and not just over sized Iphones (yes, I’m talking to you iPad). A tablet with a full OS that could be loaded with productive software instead of highly regulated ‘apps’ moves the tablet format from media viewing device to fully function workstation.

As much as I am a fan of the Android Operating system and would love to get my hands on a Archos 101 or Adam tablet by Notion Ink., Dell’s promise of a 10 inch Windows 7 tablet by mid year may be enough to hold off by tablet buying until then.

Remember how 2010 was going to be the year of the tablet? Well, its come and gone and the only legitimate tablet released was Apple’s famed Ipad, a giant version of their Itouch which appears to be more of a platform to sell Apps than anything else at this point.

So where are the tablets for the rest of us?
Where are the affordable Android tablets?

Adam Tablet by Notion Ink

The two front runners that have emerged in the budding Android tablet market are the Archos 101 and the vaporware-ish Adam Tablet by Notion Ink. Now you will start yelling and raising your hand, trying to interrupt me and say that Dell, HTC and Motorola have all released Android based tablets, but honestly, those devices are closer to the cellphone model than the laptop/netbook model of computing. First of all, we need a 10 inch screen. Anything smaller and you should just carry a cellphone. We need at least one USB port, probably some expandable hard drive memory, and it will help if its processor is 1GHz plus. WIFI, touch screen, camera and microphone go with out saying.

Of course neither of these devices are available for sale at this time. The Archos is in some weird back order limbo and the Adam’s very existence has been questioned by some, after the company took pre-order and has fudged around the release data a few time (latest rumor is its been cleared by the FCC and is shipping… any minute).

Full device specs and pricing have been documented well on the interwebs, go find them your self. We’ll be patiently waiting for the prices to drop a bit or for some unforeseen flow of cash to enter our life to buy one of these.

Probably the Adam, if it actually exists.

When Arrington posted that the Crunchpad is dead, there was mention of upcoming legal action against once partner Chandra Rathakrishnan and Fusion Garage.

On Monday Fusion Garage released the tablet now known as the JooJoo in San Francisco. How they rubbed off the CruchPad logo so fast, I’m not sure. The touch screen device is priced at $499.

Arrington announced TechCrunch filed a lawsuit Thursday against Fusion Garage, siting “Fraud and Deceit, Misappropriation of Business Ideas, Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Unfair Competition, and Violations of the Lanham Act.”.

The JooJoo ‘Web slate’ is based around a 12.1-inch diagonal 720p capacitive touch screen.
The specs include: 1366×768-pixel resolution, a built-in camera, mic, and speakers, one USB port, and a card slot. There’s 4GB of cache memory. Rathakrishnan wouldn’t say what the processor?. He also won’t say who makes the touch screen.

The JooJoo runs a proprietary Linux-based operating system whose only purpose is to run the device’s browser, based on Webkit but again a custom job by the developer. The browser supports Flash and other standard HTML extensions.

The $499 price point is too high. Arrington has previously shot for closer to $200 – $300.

Have an extra $20 sitting around?
Use Gmail?
Can’t remember all those pesky Gmail keyboard short cuts?
I present… the Gboard

This little gadget looks useless.

It plugs into your computer, using up one of your USB ports and gives you a little pad with 19 buttons that trigger some of the more common of Gmail’s keyboard short cuts. Since there are 69 Gmail shortcuts in all, it barely scratches the surface, but a 69 key keyboard with all of them would be ridiculous right?

But then again, its Christmas and under $20 gifts can be hard to come by. This might be just the trick for the geek in your life.

I am now going to go learn some of the Gmail keyboard shortcuts because before this post, I didn’t know they existed.

It seems mininova.org has purged all user-contributed torrents in an attempt to comply with an August order by a Dutch judge, removing all the indexed torrents with questionable content and become an index of Content Distribution torrents only.

Posted on the MiniNova Blog (which is now unavailable)

Hi all,

Today is an important day in the history of Mininova. From now on, we are limiting Mininova.org to our Content Distribution service. By doing so, we comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht of last August.

Unfortunately the court ruling leaves us no other option than to take our platform offline, except for the Content Distribution service. According to the verdict (Dutch link) we have to prevent uploads of torrents to Mininova that refer to certain titles or to similar-looking titles. We’ve been testing some filtering systems the last couple of months, but we found that it’s neither technically nor operationally possible to implement a 100% working filter system. Therefore, we decided that the only option is to limit Mininova to Content Distribution torrents from now on. We are still considering an appeal at this moment.

We launched our Content Distribution service in 2007. This service allows producers and artists to easily publish and distribute their content for free through Mininova. The launch of Content Distribution has proven to be a success. Countless content owners have used Content Distribution to distribute their content (e.g. albums and documentaries) for free to millions of users. For example, the Dutch band Silence is Sexy released their complete album on Mininova and received the Interactive Award 2009 for doing so. The Dutch television broadcaster VPRO decided to start using Content Distribution in 2009 in order to distribute documentaries.

We would like to thank you for your support. Especially everyone that contributed to Mininova receives a big “thank you!” for the effort! We hope to keep welcoming you on Mininova and our other projects (e.g. Snotr, Dispostable).

Thanks! The Mininova staff

www.zeropaid.com was quick to post five alternatives, but I doubt any will be as good and ‘clean’ as mininova was.

Honestly, this ranks up there with the collapse of Napster in ending an era on the internet.
